Gilgamesh, King of Uruk, sets out on adventures with the wild man Enkidu before undertaking a journey to the ends of the earth in search of the secret of immortality. The ancient epic explores friendship, family and the responsibilities of kingship, with the fear of death at the heart of its story.

Preserved on clay tablets dating back as far as four thousand years, the poem predates Homer by centuries. Revised in 2020, this second edition of Andrew George’s translation incorporates newly discovered fragments and new sources.
