Zoologist Jack Ashby takes readers behind the displays of natural history museums, examining what their collections contain and what they leave out. He considers the emphasis on mammals, the imbalance between male and female specimens and the enormous collections kept out of public view.

Nature's Memory also explores how museum histories shape their displays and how preserved specimens can contribute to research on biodiversity and environmental change.
