I Saw a Beautiful Woodpecker preserves the 1939 summer diary of eight-year-old Michał Skibiński. What begins as a school handwriting exercise records streams, caterpillars and ordinary outings; as the weeks pass, planes appear overhead and the simple sentences quietly register the beginning of war in Poland.

Key features

  • Based on Michał Skibiński’s real childhood notebook.
  • Atmospheric illustrations by Ala Bankroft sit alongside reproductions of the original diary pages.
  • The contrast between everyday childhood observations and the approach of war gives the book its emotional force.
