Emerson’s Nature and the Artists places Ralph Waldo Emerson’s influential 1836 essay Nature beside American paintings and photographs to explore a two-way exchange: how art helped shape Emerson’s thinking, and how his ideas in turn influenced the way later artists pictured the American landscape.

Key features

  • Pairs Emerson’s writing with classic American landscape paintings and photographs.
  • Uses new research to examine links between art, literature and changing ideas about nature.
