Aberhart Starts Here looks back at the Christchurch years in which Laurence Aberhart developed the photographic eye that would later bring him international recognition. His early images preserve ordinary buildings, interiors and social spaces that have since changed or disappeared.

Key features

  • Focuses on Aberhart's early photography made in and around Christchurch.
  • Includes suburban houses, abandoned shops, masonic lodges and long-lost fast-food outlets.
  • Brings together images that are now iconic with others that were little known or previously unseen.
  • Captures a city and a way of life that no longer exist in the same form.
